VRscans Library - Physically Accurate Materials | Chaos
We need you! This site wouldn't be such a great vray material resource without the help of our community! People from around the world put there knowledge and love into their materials and uploaded them to our site to help and inspire others.
If you want to contribute to this site too just follow these simple steps: Download our Sample scene for Vray and 3DSMax here vray-material.de sample scene
Load the scene and apply your material to the sample object.
Adjust the material if necessary (for lighting and stuff)
Render the image with the preset settings.
Save your render with a suitable name that represents your material (e.g. dark grey concrete, fine red leather, brushed steel)
Save your material as a single library, give it the same name
OR save the max file using the same name
Send everything including all texture files, the sample render image and either the max-file or the .mat library file to this email address: support@vray-materials.de

V-Ray 5 comes with its own extensive V-Ray Material Library designed to cover detailed resolution for your realistic renders. V-Ray Material Library Browser eases navigation in this library by providing high quality material previews, content filtering and quick search of the hundreds of materials available.
In V-Ray 6, the V-Ray Material Library Browser is replaced by the Chaos Cosmos Browser. The legacy browser is still usable but the plan is to retire it completely. Please use the materials from the Chaos Cosmos Browser for any new projects for the transition period.

Alternatively, you can download it manually by executing the mtllib.exe file located in C:\Program Files\Chaos Group\V-Ray\3ds Max NNNN\bin. For 3ds Max 2022: C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins\VRay3dsMax2022\bin.
If the file is executed directly, without a command line, the downloader checks for the VRAY_MTLIB_DOWNLOAD_DIR environment variable. You can set it typing the following command into a Command Prompt Window:
If none of the above is set, the downloader uses the last download location stored in the registry. Navigate to "HKCU\Software\Chaos Group\V-Ray Material Library", REG_SZ key "Download Path". The "Download Path" key is created or updated after successful material library download.
The companion tool is meant to automate the addition of custom material libraries to the Chaos Material Library. It works on both material library .mat files, and on .max scene files, and it's able to scan folders and subfolders for those file types, so to enable for massive processing of assets.
There are currently two important limitations which should be heeded:1) Material names: the following characters aren't allowed in material names: / : \ ? " *
The processing can be halted by standing (not tapping) on the ESC key, until the Chaos Library window pops up. The Maxscript Listener will contain information about the process progress (f.e. which material library/material is being processed).
V-Ray for Revit includes an extensive library of ready-to-use architectural materials. The material library is accessed by expanding the Asset Editor with the Material Editor tab open. To add a preset to the current Revit project, simply drag and drop a preset material from the Library into the Asset Editor's Material List.
Starting with V-Ray 6, the V-Ray Preset Material Library is moved to the Chaos Cosmos Browser. Materials that have already been downloaded with any earlier V-Ray version remain unchanged and can still be loaded as a custom folder. Please use the materials from the Chaos Cosmos Browser for any new projects.
The first time you open the left panel of the Asset Editor after installing V-Ray for Revit, you will be presented with the option to download the Preset Material Library. Note that you need about 8.5 GB of free disk space to download it.
Note that the first time the Preset Material Library is opened during a new Revit session, V-Ray connects to the Chaos servers to validate the completeness of the downloaded assets and check for updates. If a connection cannot be established, you can choose to proceed using the assets that are already available on your hard drive.
From the materials menu of the left panel, you can browse all V-Ray assets available for creation and add them to the Revit project. This can be done by drag-and-dropping of the asset into the central panel or by right-click and selecting the option Add to Scene. You can search the selected category or the whole Library for a certain asset by name. The functionality buttons at the bottom enable reordering of the assets' display.
Apart from the preset materials, you can load your own assets into the Library . Use the directory button and select the path where your assets reside. They will appear automatically in a newly created folder of the asset's tree. If you want to remove or refresh the folder, there is a context menu that appears when you right-click on the folder.
.vismat files created with V-Ray 1.49 or earlier versions of V-Ray are no longer supported. You can read a .vismat file containing materials in V-Ray but you can no longer save an asset in a .vismat format. Assets can be saved in .vrmat files only.
Materials that would take you hours to create by hand have been scanned to perfection. Enjoy over 2500 pre-made materials that fit perfectly in your V-Ray and Corona workflow with a simple drag and drop.
If you are working with tight deadlines and need to create many complex 3D materials for automotive, product design or fashion projects then the Chaos Scans service is the perfect match for you. We scan your physical material samples to create a highly accurate, ultra-photorealistic digital material for use in 3D projects.
The reality is that a deep dive into Vray is inevitable which brings us to the virtually unitelligible Asset management panel. Its got to be hard to cram all that functionality into a panel, but this is far from ideal. panels fly out left and right with mystery functionality. Environment contains Sun but not Sky. Sky is a texture(?) but dissapears when you override a color in a material. Camera exposure is crucial to seeing anything other than a white out. Materials are ok, but how to create multiple instances with different colors plastic or steel parts painted.
The online manual is superficial and most of the vids are for older versions. I have not found one .gh file to download, and not a single example of complex lighting for Rhino. (a 600mb city building without environment is not helpful)
Thx for that. Download from where? As far as I can tell, Rhino Materials can only be converted to Vray materials one at a time when loaded into a project. There is no batch convert. Older Vray materials dont load or cause a crash in GH.This source: while claiming to be free, nothing will download. Materials that come with Vray are ok and somewhat limited.
Thx again. Good sites but no translucent water, rolled steel, sail cloth, rope etc. Poligon is a subscription not free. Still looking for a water background with coastline etc. Dont see them on either.
Still trying to figure out how to take a steel material with bumps, and paint it a color to be read from a disk file into GH without requiring the loading of a giant Rhino doc with materials all over the place.
In the Vray Asset Editor in Rhino. Create Material, add normal/bump maps, textures etc. after that save the material to disk (there is small save icon at the bottom in the material tab). Then you can import it in gh.
2. If you want to know more about the VRayMtl material that comes bundled with V-Ray 6 for 3DsMax, check out the Chaos Help documentation. This page will take you through all the parameters and settings that are available in VRayMtl. Here is the URL that will take you there: [[2]( )].
When using the V-Ray renderer, there is a conflict between the algorithm of V-Ray renderer and ray tracing material. If Raytrace material is not excluded before rendering, a very high probability can lead to rendering stuck or crashing.
A material that comes from 3ds Max, the Chinese name is ray tracing material, the main function is to establish real reflection and refraction effect. When using 3ds Max's own line scanning renderer, in glass, metal and other materials have good performance, the image below is Raytrace material.
Many designers bring models with Raytrace material or textures into their own scenes when they download and use them. At the same time, there is no careful examination, excluding or unaware of the influence of Raytrace material on scene rendering.
Go to Rendering>>Material/Map Browser, material browser will pop up on the top let hand corner there is a eject icon arrow pointing down click on it and choose (Open Material Library) a window will appear where it indicates the .mat extension click on the dropdown menu and choose .max file and then find out your max file hit open, now all the materials on that scene will be visible on the material map browser window indicating the scene name on the top of the stack of material or materials, right click on the scene name like C:/user>>user>>location of max file>>name of max file.mat>>pop up>>hit save. It will ask you for the materials location where it should save them, choose the location and you are good to go, that was it.
