PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The omnipresence of technology has made group psychotherapists vulnerable to inadvertent boundary crossings, ethical  breaches, and legal quandaries, especially given the almost-daily changes in the ways we communicate electronically.  We will discuss the issues we need to be aware of, as well as ways to address these concerns.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Shari Baron, MSN, CNS, CGP, FAGPA

In over 40 years as a nurse, psychotherapist, and educator, Shari has explored ethical issues that  impact the practice of the group psychotherapist. She has used leadership positions in the

American Group Psychotherapy Association and the American Psychiatric Nurses Association to  increase awareness of these issues and to encourage discussion of the difficult choices we make  each day.

BEHAVIORAL LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this workshop, the participants will be able to:

1. Define the difference between privacy and confidentiality.

2. List three factors that might negatively influence the appropriateness of online psychotherapy for a particular  client.

3. List three boundary issues that are specific to the use of online group psychotherapy.

4. Describe four ways one can establish safeguards that allow one to practice online group psychotherapy while  maintaining ethical standards.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

PAGPS offerings are designed for mental health professionals and deal with topics that are usually underrepresented in graduate  training programs and/or that provide additional, advanced, and newly emerging perspectives on group therapy theory, research,  and practice. This program is intended for mental health professionals at a post-graduate level.

This program, when attended in its entirety, is available for 3 continuing education credits. The Philadelphia Area Group  Psychotherapy Society (PAGPS) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for  psychologists. PAGPS maintains responsibility for this program and its content. PAGPS is also approved by the PA State Board of  Social Workers, Marriage & Family Therapists & Professional Counselors to offer continuing education for social workers, marriage  & family therapists, and professional counselors. This program carries 3 CE credits.

Attendees can also receive 3 credits toward re-certification for the National Registry of Certified Group Psychotherapists (CGP).

The Philadelphia Area Group Psychotherapy Society, an affiliate of the American Group Psychotherapy Association, provides a  forum for the exchange of ideas, theories, studies, research, information, and experience in group psychotherapy. Members come  from all over the Philadelphia region, including the city of Philadelphia as well as surrounding areas in Pennsylvania, New Jersey,  and Delaware.
