Group Therapy and Plurality

Group Therapy and PAGPS

Modern day group therapy has its origins in 1905 when the internist, Joseph Pratt, found that his tuberculosis patients responded better when they were able to talk about his presentations on hygiene in discussion groups.

The sharing of information amongst peers and joining with others provided support, hope, a sense of belonging, better medical compliance, and better health outcomes. This is a cornerstone of PAGPS’s belief in the value and efficacy of group psychotherapy. People do better when they are connected to others. Community, support, sharing, and developing trust in oneself and others facilitates better mental health.

Groups are the foundation in which growth occurs.

Plurality and PAGPS

PAGPS is a pluralistic organization supporting clinicians who are interested in group dynamics, therapy and group leadership. We hold the belief that there are a range of ways to utilize the group to promote healing. We are represented by multiple theoretical approaches to the understanding of human behavior in groups and the ways in which the group is utilized to help people achieve their therapeutic goals.

Whether the leader utilizes techniques to do therapy within the group or uses the group to highlight process, PAGPS serves both the professional and the public in making quality group
therapy accessible to all.
