Why is racism so hard to talk about? The influence of racism on our collective psyche is  tremendous, whether we are consciously aware of it or not. Structural racism has social and  political implications that affect clinicians and clients alike. While it can be challenging and  uncomfortable to discuss, increasing our awareness and pushing past our own resistances to  exploring racial dynamics is crucial to our work with increasingly diverse populations. Our  ability to examine race-related issues enhances personal and professional confidence.  This racial literacy consultation workshop will facilitate dialogue about race and racism  among clinicians, and strengthen their capacities to understand and respond to racial  dynamics in group settings. Participants will be challenged to connect to their personal  experiences and explore how to work through issues of race with clients and groups, and  within themselves.

From attendance at this virtual event, participants will be able to:

1. Identify three challenges and barriers to discussing race and racism in clinical  practice.

2. List the three types of micro-aggressions and describe the impact that micro aggressions have on people of color.

3. Identify three ways in which racial themes emerge in group settings. 4. Identify three strategies for inviting and maintaining a clinical focus on race in  individual and group practice.

5. Apply best practices for group therapists and facilitators addressing racial dynamics in  groups.

PRESENTERS: KATHLEEN ISAAC, PHD & FABIOLA DESMONT, LMSW

Fabiola Desmont, LMSW currently teaches graduate-level social work students at New York University (NYU) and  West Chester University, where she specializes in generalist and family practice, research methods, and clinical  practice with groups. Ms. Desmont is also a member of the Board of the Directors of the Eastern Group  Psychotherapy Society (EGPS).

Kathleen Isaac, PhD is a licensed clinical psychologist at NYU Medical Center where she provides individual,  couples, and group therapy for medical students, residents, and medical employees. She also has a private  practice where she specializes in trauma, health psychology, and cultural issues (i.e. race, spirituality, LGBTQ+  issues, etc.) She is a former secretary and current member at large of the Board of Directors of the Eastern  Group Psychotherapy Society (EGPS) and recently published an article detailing her experience of creating  and facilitating a support group for underrepresented minorities in medicine.

Dr. Isaac and Ms. Desmont are both members of the EGPS Work Group for Racial Equity.

ABOUT PAGPS CONTINUING EDUCATION

PAGPS offerings are designed for mental health professionals and deal with topics that are usually underrepresented in graduate training programs and/or that provide additional, advanced, and newly  emerging perspectives on group therapy theory, research, and practice. This program is intended for mental  health professionals at a post-graduate level. This program, when attended in its entirety, is available for 3 continuing education credits. The Philadelphia Area Group Psychotherapy Society (PAGPS) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. PAGPS maintains responsibility for this program and its content. PAGPS is also approved by the PA State Board of Social Workers,  Marriage & Family Therapists & Professional Counselors to offer continuing education for social workers, marriage & family therapists, and professional counselors. This program carries 3 CE credits.

Attendees can also receive 3 credits toward re-certification for the National Registry of Certified Group Psychotherapists (CGP). PAGPS is committed to accessibility and non-discrimination in its continuing education activities and will conduct its activities in conformity with the American Psychological Association’s Ethical Principles for Psychologists.
